Are you a fan of indie rock? Yes? Then you’ll love Ten Tonnes. This lovely lad from England started out in pubs and slowly making his way across Europe now. Before his performance at this year’s RADAR Festival I got to speak with Ten Tonnes about his debut record, his relationship with his famous brother and Bob Ross!
I gotta ask Ten Tonnes is a super special name. I read somewhere that you came up with it while you did open mic shows and you wanted to have a name that no-one else has. But that doesn’t really answer where it came from, does it? 🙂
I don’t actually know where it came from. It just came out of no-where. I wish I had a better explanation than that! 🙂 I was at the pub and it came out of thin air. I’m sorry it’s not really a satisfying answer! *laughs*
*laughing too* It’s OK. It is what it is! Annie Mac just named Lucy „Hottest record of the world“. That’s such a huge honour. How does it feel when your music get recognized like this?
It’s amazing! At the moment it feels like loads of people are checking out my music which is amazing. You want to hear people saying it’s possible so when it happens it’s great. A lot of hard work is paying off now.
You’ll be releasing your debut record this spring. What are you expecting or would like for it to happen with it?
Erm… you can expect… It’s a fun guitar record – a good indie rock record really. Good pop tunes with big choruses stuff like that.
I agree. I was able to had a sneak peek and I gotta say you are right.
You did? cool! I don’t really know what to expect. I don’t want to have too many expectations in case nothing happens then I’ll be disappointed. But hopefully loads of people will hear it and enjoy it. Fingers crossed, touch wood. *knocks on the table* 😀
Can you tell me a bit more about the musical influence of your debut record?
There was always music in the house I was growing up in: Paul Simon stuff like that. When I was 12 or 13 years old I started listening to the Beatles. They kinda felt different to me. So I started playing guitar which I taught myself. From there the whole world of music is open to you. So I listened to everything. Spent all my money on records and CD’s. It’s kind of a mixed bag. There’s a lot of older stuff that I listen to mainly but more recent stuff would be like Strokes and Arctic Monkeys.
More like rock then.

Cool cool. So after the release you are touring it through the UK. Are you planning to expand the tour to Europe? A headlining gig in Zurich for example? 😉
Yeah yeah 100%. I really want to because I haven’t really played much in Europe. It will be this year in autumn time I reckon between September and November.
Something to look forward to! Speaking of touring. What’s your bucket list venue to play in?
The biggest in England is Wembley Stadium. That would be amazing. Anywhere really though. I just really love playing live. Anywhere with a good crowd is pretty decent. It’s exciting to see that the venue’s are keep getting bigger and bigger. There not massive yet but fingers crossed they will be.
Well I mean it’s getting there! 🙂 Being at the start of hopefully a successful career. What would you say should happen that you can say „Yup, I’ve made it with my music“?
It’s going to sound a bit corny but I feel like I’ve already have to be honest. It’s my full-time job and that alone is nuts to be honest. I feel really lucky to be able to say that. So yeah obviously you want as many people to hear and appreciate your music as possible. But to me if I can keep doing it than that’s kinda successful.
I’ve asked this question to other artists before and they also say if they can keep doing what they are doing they’re happy.
Yeah exactly. It might not be as an artist but as long as I can do music I’m cool with that.

Helga who obviously knows your back ground a bit asked how is your relationship with your brother? (Ten Tonnes’ brother is George Ezra)

Follow up question: Would you say it’s an advantage or a disadvantage?
I don’t think it’s either really. I never really used it. I’ve been myself. So I didn’t have any advantage from it. As long as people don’t assume that I like do it because of him than that’s fine by me.
That would be weird.
Yes, exactly. ‘Cause it doesn’t work. I still have to be good because otherwise people wouldn’t listen to it. It’s annoying when people assume that. I don’t think there is really a disadvantage. He’s great and it’s cool that we both get to do as well. It’s very lucky.
Now I’m the one asking questions in the fan section *Laughs*. Do you think you’ll be collaborating?
Maybe. I don’t we’ll ever do something like George & Ethan but we might do…. I don’t know… I don’t know how it’s gonna look like…

Hmm I don’t know. We might do a song but not in the near future maybe like 20 years. I want to get to a point where I am happy with my own thing.

Yes exactly. I would never say never. We’ll see.
Sandra asked how do you break the ice when you play in front of people that don’t know you?
I’m not really good at the chat between songs. My approach is just play really well. I’m better than I ever have been at the chat between songs. Sometimes you just can’t expect them to be going mental. People can enjoy it and just stand still. I needed a while to work that out. When I go to a gig I’m not going insane but I’m still loving it. I’m just chilling. So just play as well as you can and hope they enjoy it. It’s always about how loud they are when you finish a song. That’s always a good indicator of how well it’s going. As long as they are loud between songs then that’s good.
They shouldn’t be loud in between the songs….
I don’t mind. As long as they are singing the songs and not talking.
That’s exactly what I meant! 😀 Unfortunately in some venues in Switzerland we get a lot of talkers.

Beach or Mountains?
Funny. Shirley from Loads of Music asked me the same question. I said beach but now I’m going for mountains. Have you ever watched Bob Ross?

Rain or Sun?
I like the sun but I don’t like being too hot. I love the rain as well. My tour manager always says “You are insane” because I really like bad weather. I think one of the best feelings is when it’s raining outside and you are warm inside chillin’ out. I go rain.

Sweet or salty?

Pub or massive arena?
For playing? Good question! It kinda depends what the crowd’s like. Massive arena is easier I think because you can’t see people’s faces. Those smaller gigs can be really intimidating. I used to play gigs looking down because if you look up you just got direct eyes so close to you. Arenas are good fun too. So either I can’t choose.
And going to gigs?
Probably pub actually.
Zurich or London?
I don’t think there is a right answer *Laughs* I feel like I should say Zurich. I love London it’s where I live. So London’s great but maybe Zurich is too.

Bevor wir unser Interview beginnen, erzählt mir Wincent was er heute über die Schweiz gelernt hat. Meine Vorgänger, diverse Radiostationen, brachten ihm den Kanton Graubünden näher, das Frauenwahlrecht und wie viel Kilo Schokolade ein Schweizer im Jahr isst. Kekoas Korner ist das letzte Interview an seinem Schweizer Promo-Tag für seine neue CD „Irgendwie Anders“, die nächste Woche am Freitag erscheint.

Meine Mom hat dich damals als Support Act bei Andreas Bourani gesehen und mir geschrieben, dass du endlich mal wieder ein guter Support warst 🙂 Siehst du Andreas Bourani so ein bisschen als Förderer deiner Karriere?
Als Förderer? Leider habe ich mit ihm nur das eine Konzert in Zürich zusammen gespielt.
Echt?
Ja. Sein Support Act mit dem er die ganze Tour gemacht hat, ist ausgefallen und dann hat mich Universal gefragt, ob ich das machen möchte. Ich hab mich noch gar nicht bereit gefühlt. Es war mein aller aller erstes Live-Konzert. Mein erstes Konzert mit einer eigenen Band war in Zürich im Hallenstadion.
Sehr cool! Leider konnte ich damals wegen der Schule nicht hin, aber schon dein erstes Konzert hat meiner Mom gefallen 🙂

Deine Band war ja schon damals die gleiche wie heute. Lea – ein Fan – und ich würden gerne wissen wie ihr euch gefunden habt?
Im Studio in dem ich meine ganzen Songs geschrieben und aufgenommen hab, gab es einen Nebenraum, in dem ganz frisch ein Pianist eingezogen ist. Ich musste damals für die Kindernothilfe, für die ich Botschafter bin, eine kleine Gala spielen – nur auf Klavier. Ich kannte ja noch gar keinen und da hab ich ihn einfach gefragt, ob wir dies zusammen machen können. Und er meinte, ja klar können wir machen. So habe ich meine Band kennen gelernt.
Benni Freibott (Gitarre), Manuel Weber (Keyboard), Manfred Sauer (Bass) und Florian Kettler (Schlagzeug)
Er und seine Jungs haben am Wochenende auf Gigs, Hochzeiten usw. zusammen gespielt und dann hab ich sie gefragt, ob wir nicht zusammen Deutschpop machen wollen. Sie waren natürlich zuerst skeptisch, weil mich kannte ja noch niemand und ich hatte noch keine Songs veröffentlicht. Als ich dann gesagt habe unser erstes Konzert ist im Hallenstadion in Zürich, meinten sie nur so: „Ja, ja verarsch uns nicht“. Aber als wir dann in Zürich standen, passte es für alle und wir sagten uns, lass es uns probieren. Und jetzt können wir selber so viele Konzerte spielen mit der gleichen Band!
Ich hab euch letzten November gesehen. Man merkt total, dass ihr euch so gut versteht!
Meine Plattenfirma wollte zuerst eine gleichaltrige Band, aber ich wollte es einfach so haben, wie es natürlich entstanden ist. Meine Band ist zehn Jahre älter als ich, aber trotzdem ist es mega. Es ist geil, dass wir so zusammen gewachsen sind. Wie eine kleine Familie.

Jetzt gehst du wieder auf Headline-Tour im Rahmen deines neuen Albums. Planst du auch mal Tourdaten im Ausland – also nicht Deutsch-sprachiges Ausland? Ein Fan lebt in Tschechien und hat gefragt, ob du mal dahin kommst?
Geplant ist es im Moment nicht. Aber wenn da deutsche Musik läuft und man da irgendwie ein Konzert stattfinden lassen kann, wär’s natürlich möglich. Ich dachte eh, dass ich niemals den deutschen Raum verlassen werde. Aber ich hatte ja im Dezember auch eine Tour in Kanada, Mexiko und Amerika. Das war auch schon total absurd. Bis jetzt ist nur Deutschland, Österreich Schweiz geplant für diese Tour. Mal schauen wo’s noch hingeht dieses Jahr. Kommt ja auch drauf an wie erfolgreich dieses Album wird. Ich weiss es ja noch nicht.

Da wir schon über „Irgendwie Anders“ reden. Wer hat dich musikalisch beeinflusst auf diesem Album?
Ich glaub am meisten mein Produzent (Kevin Zaremba) mit dem ich seit fünf Jahren arbeite. Mit ihm habe ich auch meine allerersten Songwriting-Sessions gemacht. Wir haben das erste Album zusammen gemacht und haben uns beide musikalisch weiterentwickelt und ganz viel Neues ausprobiert. Gesanglich hab ich mich weiterentwickelt. Ich traue mich viel viel mehr. Auch produktionsmässig: Ich bin viel persönlicher geworden. Ich glaube, das sollten auch alle hören, die das Album ganz durchhören.

Ist schon anders wie das erste Album. Viele Facetten und sehr persönlich.
Jetzt warst du ja bereits in Südafrika und bekamst weitere musikalische Anregungen von deinen Sing-meinen-Song-Kollegen. Darfst du uns irgendetwas verraten?
Zu den Songs einzeln darf ich natürlich nichts sagen. Man kennt ja, dass Leute auf YouTube deine Songs covern und nachsingen. Aber dort war’s so, dass die Künstler die Songs genommen haben und komplett zum eigenen gemacht haben. Sie haben sie umarrangiert, umgeschrieben, in andere Sprachen übersetzt. Es war richtig krass zu sehen, was aus meinen Songs entstehen kann. Auch umgekehrt: Was aus den Songs, der anderen Künstler entsteht. Es war eine richtig spannende Erfahrung für mich. Auch eine Riesenehre. Die Künstler, die da mitmachen, da war ich 12/13 Jahre und die liefen dann im Radio und waren Stars für mich. Und auf einmal darf ich mit denen Musik machen! Es war ein ehrenvolles Erlebnis!
Wann wird das eigentlich ausgestrahlt?
Am 7.5 fängt das an und wir starten auch gleich mit meiner Sendung – also mit meinen Songs. Ich bin der Start der Serie.

Das ist meine letzte Frage. Deine Fans sind echt unglaublich. Ich hab noch nie so viele Fan-Fragen für den zweiten Teil meines Interviews bekommen. Die ersten zwei Fragen kommen von den zwei Fans, die letzten November die Feuerzeug-Aktion in der Halle 622 organisiert haben. Das war echt ein Gänsehaut-Moment. (Seht euch meine Highlights auf Instagram an). Wie speziell war es für dich?
Ich find sowas immer unbeschreiblich, dass sich Fans wie Daniela und Vanessa (Winnis_Schweizer_Crew) so Gedanken machen und dann die ganze Masse an Leuten auch animiert, an einem Strick zu reissen, um mir eine Freude zu bereiten. Sonst kenn ich’s bei Konzerten so, dass alle das Handy hochholen und ich sag dann so: „Alle, die noch old-school sind, können auch die Feuerzeuge hochhalten“. Dann machen das so vier Leute. Auf einmal waren es 800 Feuerzeuge in der Luft. Vor allem das Klicken die ganze Zeit, weil man ja das Feuer immer wieder anzünden muss. Ich hörte 800 Mal das „Klick-Klick-Klick! 🙂 Das war schon geil. Ich liebe solche Aktionen.
Es ist auch schön zu sehen, dass das ohne meine Absprache läuft. Die Fans überlegen sich das, um mir eine Freude zu machen. Ein Fan hat in einer Halle auch mal so kleine durchsichtige Papierschnipsel in verschiedenen Farben verteilt – so reihenmässig. Die erste Reihe hatte Rot, dann Gelb usw. Dann mussten das alle vor die Handylichter halten und dann entstand ein riesengrosser Regenbogen aus all den Handys. Andere halten alle die gleichen Plakate hoch. Sie überlegen sich ganz ganz viel. Wie du schon sagtest, meine Fans sind echt krass. Die stellen auch bei Votings alle anderen in den Schatten. Es ist so schön zu sehen, dass man auch so viel zurückbekommt. Man gibt auf der Bühne immer so viel und man versucht, die beste Show zu liefern und die Fans liefern sich mittlerweile fast eine eigene Show! So macht’s Spass! 🙂

Daniela hat eine mega schwierige Frage.
Oh, Oh!
Wenn du dich entscheiden müsstest zwischen: Alle bis heute gesammelten Erinnerungen werden gelöscht oder du kannst keine neuen Erinnerungen mehr sammeln. Wie würdest du dich entscheiden?
*Überlegt* Puh. Das ist wirklich schwierig. Ich finde die Erinnerungen, die man im Jugendalter/ in den 20er macht, die sind lebensentscheidend und wichtig für die ganze Entwicklung. Aber da ich 26 bin, hab ich hoffentlich noch so viele Jahre vor mir. Grade ich als Familienfan, ich will unbedingt Vater werden, ich glaub, das möchte ich alles miterleben. Das sind so meine Lebensziele, von da her würde ich alles hinter mir lassen und jetzt neu beginnen.
Das war jetzt tiefgründig!
Vanessa hat eine Frage: Was würdest du ändern, wenn du im Musikbusiness das Sagen hättest?
*Überlegt nochmals* Mann, die beiden stellen wirklich schwere Fragen! Es ist wirklich schwierig. Mir sagen viele Musikerkollegen, die schon seit längerem dabei sind: „Oh, ich wünsch mir die alten Zeiten zurück mit Plattenkäufen und ohne Streaming. Da war noch alles viel cooler. Da hat man noch mehr Geld verdient“. Was ja gar nicht im Vordergrund stehen sollte, finde ich, bei dem ganzen Musik-kram. Ich finde heutzutage durch das ganze Streaming hat sich geändert, dass viel mehr Leute Zugang zu deiner Musik haben. Jeder auf der Welt kann meine Musik hören und nicht nur die Leute, die meine Platte kaufen. Was ich an sich gut finde. Ich glaube, ich würde mir wünschen, dass die einzelnen Gernes bisschen mehr Einsicht in die anderen haben. Dass es nicht mehr so heisst: Das ist Deutschrap, das ist Deutschpop, Rock. Die Rocker finden die Deutschpoper scheisse. Deutschrap findet Pop kacke etc. Wir sollten uns mehr als Gemeinschaft sehen. Wir sind alle Musiker. Wir ziehen alle am gleichen Strang. Zwar aus verschiedenen Genres, aber wir sind Musiker und machen Mucke und spielen Konzerte, um den Leuten da draussen eine schöne Zeit zu bieten. Wir geben ihnen Songs fürs Leben mit denen sie Erinnerungen verbinden und das sollten einige ein bisschen als „Gemeinsamen-Strang“ sehen und nicht als „Business-Geld-Verdien-Strang“. Viele machen ja das, um zu schauen, mit was sie am meisten Geld verdienen. Es sollte so ein bisschen der Musik-Gemeinschaftsgedanke im Vordergrund stehen 🙂 Sonst bin ich eigentlich mit allem was kommt und sich verändert mega happy.
Das finde ich echt gut. Ich konnte noch nie etwas mit Genres anfangen.
Ich ja auch nicht weil ich so viel durcheinander höre. Ich komm ja aus der Metalschiene.
*Überrascht* Echt jetzt?!
Ja, ich hör 80% nur Metal und liebe das. Hör mittlerweile auch Deutschrap. Auch wenn ich das eigentlich kacke finde, dass die deutsche Jugend Texte über Koksen, Nutten und so was hört. Ich hör jetzt nicht den Deutschrap, aber so Hip Hop und Pop, den ich vorher nicht gehört hätte. Ich bin einfach Musik-neugierig und bin interessiert, was wer macht und wie alles arrangiert ist. Deswegen sollte dieser Genre-Gedanke so ein bisschen verfliegen.
Viele sagen: „Ah das ist Schlager oder das ist nicht Schlager“. Mein Gott, es sollte doch einfach schöne Musik sein. Ist die Musik jetzt schlecht nur weil sie Schlager oder Deutschrap ist nur weil man sie so betitelt? Ist doch eigentlich völlig egal!
Bin ich total bei dir. So doofe Genre-Gedanken hat ich nie. Für mich wars immer: Entweder mag ich den Song oder eben nicht – egal was für ein Genre, der jetzt ist!
Bei Festivals z.B. Da wird ein Hip-Hop-Festival gemacht, da hat ein Pop-Act nichts verloren. Grade bei Festivals, finde ich, sollten die so bunt wie möglich sein und für alle was da sein.
Sophia: Wünschst du dir ein normales Leben ohne gleich erkannt zu werden?
Das ich ein unnormales Leben habe, würde ich jetzt nicht sagen. Ich führe glaube ich trotzdem ein ganz normales Leben, in dem ich einfach erkannt werde.
Ich glaube, es gibt Situationen, in denen ich mir wünschen würde, nicht erkannt zu werden. Mir fehlt mittlerweile so der Respekt für die Privatsphäre und die Distanz, die man hat. Ich glaube, das ist so ein bisschen durch Social Media kaputt gegangen. Da ist man so nahbar und immer bei den Fans, was ich ja eigentlich super finde. Aber wenn ich mit meiner kleinen Schwester in den Freizeitpark gehe, kann ich es nicht mehr machen, weil ich alle 5 Minuten Fotos machen muss. Da sagt meine Schwester: „Hey Wincent, schön mit dir Zeit zu verbringen, aber ich habe nicht so viel Spass und wir können nicht zusammen fahren, weil alle immer Fotos von dir möchten.“ Da fängt man dann an, nur noch Zuhause zu bleiben. Ich gehe mittlerweile nicht mehr in Restaurants oder bestelle Essen aufs Hotelzimmer, weil ich nicht runtergehen möchte weil ich mir denke, muss ich dann schon wieder Bilder machen? Da fehlt mir so ein bisschen der Respekt vor der Distanz. Ansprechen immer gerne, Fotos machen auch, aber vielleicht mal verstehen, wann man gerade privat unterwegs ist – vor allem mit der Familie – und wann es OK ist. Da wünsche ich mir ein bisschen mehr Feingefühl.

Für mich ist es manchmal noch ein bisschen schwierig zu verstehen.
Ist es echt so krass? Da kennen die nix?
Z.B. beim Essen. Wenn das Essen kommt, stehe ich für ein Foto auf. Dann kommen drei andere und meinen, wenn du grade dabei bist, machen wir doch auch gleich Fotos. 20 Minuten später setzt du dich hin und das Essen ist kalt und die Familie ist dabei. Das ist dann schon schwierig.
Oh nee. Das ist nicht schön.
Ja, ich glaube das sind so die Schattenseiten für die öffentliche Arbeit, die man macht. Ich glaube, da muss man irgendwie noch versuchen, beides zusammen zu bekommen. Privat- und Berufsleben. Kommt noch.
Alex hat schon ein Ticket für Stuttgart. Ist es schwer, persönliche Lieder wie Pläne oder 1993 vor Publikum zu singen? Wirst du’s überhaupt machen?
Ja. Ich hab die Tour im November noch nicht geplant – was wir da genau spielen. Um so etwas zu erzählen, sucht man sich ja eigentlich Freunde und Familie. Wir Musiker schreiben halt Songs drüber, damit wir es verarbeiten können. Da hat mich letztens ein Fan gefragt, ist es nicht blöd wenn du Pläne singst und du wirst jeden Abend, an dem du dieses Lied singst an deine Ex-Freundin erinnert? Und ich so, ja stimmt, eigentlich ist das nicht so klug. So weit habe ich nicht gedacht. Dann habe ich mir gedacht, dass ist eigentlich die gleiche Form, ob ich das runterschreibe oder mit Freunden spreche. Da rede ich eigentlich auch vor Freunden – meinen ganzen Fans. Die sind alle wie kleine Mini-Therapeuten, die da unten stehen und ich spreche mich halt vor meinen Fans aus und verarbeite das. Ich glaube, das ist ein guter Weg, um das zu verarbeiten. So viel es geht, darüber zu sprechen. Wo spricht man mehr drüber als bei einem Konzert? Da spreche ich immer ganz ganz viel drüber. Erzähl die Story, sind den Song, Fans heulen, ich heul. Ist schön 🙂
Noemi fragt: Bist du gläubig?
Religiös bin ich glaube ich nicht. In meiner Familie war das auch nie ein Thema. Früher sind wir Sonntags in die Kirche und mein Opa war eher der, der aus den Liedzetteln Papierflieger gebastelt hat und durch die Kirche geworfen hat. Das war mir und meiner Oma dann ein bisschen unangenehm und wir sind dann früher raus.
Ich glaube, dass ich so ein bisschen unreligiös geworden bin, weil man oft die ganzen Extrem-Seiten der Religionen mitbekommt. Alles was in den Nachrichten über Religion steht, steht immer nur im Extremfall da. Die Extremisten von der Religion haben das getan usw.
Religion definiert sich ja nicht durch deren Extremisten, sondern einfach durch den Glauben an sich. Ich glaube, ich bin viel zu krasser Realist, dass ich so einen Glauben entwicklen kann.

Ich dachte, das letzte Interview, muss ich jetzt nochmals die ganzen Fragen von vorher beantworten. Und es sind alles Fragen, die hab ich noch nie vorher gehört. Das ist sehr gut.

Daline möchte gerne wissen, ob du dir eine wohlverdiente Auszeit nimmst nächstes Jahr?
Ich glaube nicht. Ich hab das immer geplant, dass ich über den Winter mal eine Auszeit nehme, aber dann hab ich eine Tour gemacht, mein Album gemacht. So ein Jahr Auszeit – ich glaube – ich bin dafür viel zu Workaholic und muss immer arbeiten. Wenn ich mal zwei Tage meine E-Mails nicht mache, dann denk ich so „Scheisse, du hast zwei Tage nicht gearbeitet! Du musst jetzt unbedingt wieder arbeiten. Wincent’s Wunder und ganz viele andere Fans fragten, ob es eine Akustik-Tour geben wird?
Mhhh… Mhh… Müsst ich mal überlegen. Ich habs noch nicht geplant. Aber ich mach auf jeden Fall ein Akustik-Album zum zweiten Album – wie beim ersten Album. Es hat mir mega gut gefallen, weil ich mit den Akustik-Songs gross geworden bin. Diese Akustik-Tour, die wir mit dem ersten Album gemacht haben, war schon schön. Wir haben ein kleines Wohnzimmer gebaut, nur sitzendes Publikum – was für mich auf der Bühne ganz ein komisches Gefühl war. Es war natürlich nicht die Energie, die ich sonst gewohnt bin. War eine ganz ungewohnte Situation! Wenn ich im Nachhinein so darüber nachdenke, war es eine mega schöne Erfahrung. Vielleicht machen wir das einfach nochmal. Dieses Jahr passt es nicht mehr rein, aber man könnte 2020 auf jeden Fall noch eine Akustik-Tour machen.

Du kannst es als eigener Künstler oder auch als Fan sagen.
Beides schwierig! Ich finde, es hat beides seinen Charme. Kleine Locations sind intim und schön. Man kann mit den ganzen Fans gut interagieren.
Grosse Locations sind atemberaubend und beeindruckend. Vor allem sieht man mal wie viel Support man bekommt. Der meiste Support entsteht dadurch, dass die Leute zum Konzert gehen. Ein Album kaufen und runterladen ist schnell gemacht. Wenn Leute wirklich sagen, ich geh mit der ganzen Familie am Samstagabend auf ein Konzert und investier meine private Zeit, um deine Musik zu hören, das ist für mich das ultimative Commitment. Je mehr Leute, die du davon hast und den Abend mit dir verbringen, desto mehr Support fühlt man in dem Moment.
Du kannst auch beides nehmen 🙂

Kekoas Korner: So are you ready?
Hunter: Yeah, absolutely.
On the Insta live last week you talked about your tour being named „Closer to you“. So you’re sharing lots of personal stuff in your new songs. Now my question: What’s your biggest fear?
I think the biggest fear is sharing too much! 🙂 Oversharing and feeling like okay we could have probably done it without that. But I’ve learned that this is the beautiful part about writing this album. Bringing one song to the show and introducing it slowly to the world taught me that the more you share the closer you are to the people around you. That’s friends, family or fans – that’s just music. My favourite music is so direct and so unfiltered. So I think the journey to get there in the process of writing music has been one of my favourite parts. The biggest area for growth for me is being more honest and putting more of myself in music.
Speaking of your new songs Heartbreak and One Shot. Will there be a new record coming soon?
There will be an album. I can’t say when. I’m glad you asked. They are all part of an album that we can talk about probably later this year!
Well that sounds good at least we got a little teaser. Who would you say is your musical influence for this album or the past ones?
It’s all over the map. It’s been everything from U2 to Punch Brothers. I like studying other artists and albums for long periods of time and really getting to know the albums. Not just the words but getting the heart and soul behind it. It’s a fun study for me. The more you start to pick the things that you love out of the music and internalize them versus I want to make a record that sounds like a twenty-one pilots record. Number one that’s not okay and number two and the most important part is that you have to be you. The process of music and finding out what I love about it and what that means to me and my writing process and how I can interpret that. If I hear more of their stories I will tell more of mine. Basically it’s trying and failing until finding out what’s right for me. The list of influences is long. There’s a lot of music that was coming my way the last 18 months that have totally changed the way I approach making music.
So can you tell me a few names off that list. You said Punch Brothers?
Yeah! That was a big one early on. I also went through a BIIIG U2 phase last year. Not phases in like “I’m over it” but a phase like I studied sections of their career for several months and really got to know the albums. Of course some albums more than others. The study of a four piece band with a very limited production making such a big impact that was something I wanted to get better at and know a bit more about. It’s all a lesson in restraint. It’s very intentional and very emotional. It’s hard to get those two things in the same place.
Sounds really interesting. You’ve got a busy year: Playing the Opry, going overseas with the C2C festival which I will be going to as well….
Oh that’s awesome. Have you been before?
No I haven’t. It’s the first time!
Ahh you are gonna love it!!
Yes and I am really much looking forward to it but before that I’ll be seeing you in Zurich on your European tour plus the tour through America. What can we expect from the „Closer to you“ tour? Can you tell me a little secret? 🙂
*laughs* Sure. The thing about the “Closer to you” tour is, it’s not like any other tour we’ve done even tough it shares a lot with tours that we’ve done before. It’s nothing like anything we’ve done before because of the fact that it comes from this new music. For a while we’ve been touring with kinda the same collection of songs adding one or two. With the release of new songs it injects new energy. This is like a fresh reboot almost like a renovation of a house. It’s not unrecognizable but for me it feels brand new. Some of the places are places we’ve played before and some aren’t. It all feels like I’ve just woken up from a dream and it’s a whole new chapter.
So we can expect a lot?
The fun thing about this tour is the new take on some of the older music. Everybody is new on this tour except for me. 🙂 The songs I’ve been playing for a long time will be now re-imagined as if they would have been recored for this album. That’s gonna be really fun to do.
That sounds exciting. In like 2 or 3 weeks I’ll be seeing what this show’s about.
God that’s three weeks away? Good Lord. I’m excited!
Me too! Now Europe is slowly starting to listen to country music too. What do you want to tell your European fans who are coming to the shows?
Country covers a lot of ground. There is so much in country. I don’t think you could sum up the genre. If you pick three names doing completely different things I think you still leave a lot out. I’m exited for people to get know country as I know country. It’s a very vast genre full of brilliant storytellers with musically brilliant ideas. There’s a lot of people bringing new ideas from other genres into country music in such a way that goes along what we were talking about: The studying and internalization of things they grew up listening to. There is so much to discover in country music. I think you couldn’t properly dive into country music and don’t find anything that feels like home.
At age 27 you’ve played so many amazing venues already. Do you still have a bucket list venues to go?
I’ve got a few for sure. Pick the arena in every city around the world and the theatres too. I love theatres. I’ve learned that it’s such a special place to experience music and play it. That’s history. That’s historically where people would go to listen to music. On that list would also be Red Rocks. I’ve never played Red Rocks in Colorado. I’d love to do that. I wanna play as many places as I possibly can put my name on the wall! 🙂
Red Rocks is also on my bucket list but to watch!

Sounds like we have a deal! 🙂 And what was your favourite venue you’ve already played in?
Can I pick 3? The Fox Theatre in Detroit was one of my all time favourite venues to play in. That leads into the Ryman will always have my heart. That will alway be my favourite venue – probably. Even though Nashville is not necessarily my home town it feels like home town the more that I live here. It embraces the people that come here to make music. The Ryman is just a spectacular place. I think I’m just gonna stick with that. The Ryman has my heart.
I’ve heard a lot of good things about the Ryman. And finally you are playing like a million instruments what would be the instrument you’d like to try to learn next? Maybe the Alphorn here in Switzerland?
Honestly I would just like to play the violin half decent. I’m not good at playing any instruments if I’m totally honest but I’d like to be decent enough in some sort of string instruments like the violin. I’d love to arrange string parts. I’ve never gotten along with that instrument for some reason but I’d like to.

I would love that!
But nothing’s been planned yet?
Not officially. The good news for me – at least – once you start touring like we do this year hopefully the right people hear about it or you come in contact with right people and things happen. It’s momentum. Once you get back on the road… I’m hoping at least that that’s the result of it.
She also did a lyrics video to your song Heart break and it looks amazing. Do you check out fan-made videos and art?
Absolutely! Yes! 100%! In fact we had a really fun idea that I can’t say much about. Not too long ago I actually made a playlist of my favourite cover videos. That’s one of the biggest compliments you can get as an artist – just watch someone else cover your song. It makes me feel really cool. It’s a really good feeling! It’s awesome because they come up with these new versions of your songs. They give it a totally different live and that’s also the beauty of collaborations. Somebody else puts their creativity to work and really makes a song to their own. I love it and I love watching it. It’s awesome!! It’s so inspiring too. It gives you so many ideas and so much energy!
Taylor would like to know what’s your favourite part about meeting fans?
My favourite part is when they share their story. When I get to hear how they found a song or why a song means something to them – just getting to know them. I feel like music is such a great way to connect with people and that’s why we do what we do and we love what we do. It’s the best part the connection. That’s the destination for all music.
Nathan enjoyed your USO show in Wiesbaden. How much do shows like this mean to you?
That’s one of the most important parts about touring. I’ve always made it known to our team that that’s a big priority and that I feel very passionate about. We all have an appreciation for our men and women but to be there with them on base is a completely different experience. Being there in person and show them gratitude through music. The spirit in those rooms is incredible. They are incredible people. Hopefully our appreciation and gratitude comes across. It’s a privilege and a massive opportunity to bring home to them.

Nico Santos released his debut record “Streets of Gold” on Oct, 12th. “Rooftop” immediately resonated with me and it became this spring’s favourite song of mine. But he was already working behind the scenes as a singer songwriter for years. We all know Mark Forster’s “Wir sind Gross” and yes he co-wrote the song. So when I was told that I could have a quick chat with Nico Santos I was really happy and I was super excited to get to know the person behind those songs.
So Nico, you’re not a newbie in the music biz. So why did you release your debut album only just now?
I wanted to have the album just right so that I won’t say in 10 years time „Ahh I should have spent more time on it“. I wanted to have it perfect. I can listen to the record in one go and think wow I love every song so that I don’t have to skip one.
How long did it take for it to be just perfect?
Streets of Gold – the title track I wrote 4 years ago. Since then I wrote 200 or 300 songs. Those are the 14 best songs which transport the best emotions I had at that time.
Streets of Gold – What does the the name mean?
It’s about the time before I started with music, before I found the right people to play music and the desire to play music. It’s about the desire to find the right path in life. Everyone knows that feeling. And for me it was music.
The cool thing was that when I moved to Berlin I find the right guys to build a team and create my new record.
But what does it actually mean?
If you look up synonyms for lucky „Streets of Gold“ comes up so it’s the pursuit of happiness.
(A little side note on that: The saying comes from the time where Europeans immigrated to the US because people would say the streets are paved with gold over there.)
The record is so versatile. This morning you posted outtakes from your video shoot where you danced like Michael Jackson. So I assume his one of your idols but who else are your musical inspirations?
My parents, definitely. My Dad’s a Jazz musician and my Mom does rock. But other than them Chris Brown, Justin Timberlake.
Did you see them live?
Yes, both. 🙂
Prince and Stevie Wonder are inspirations too. My parents gave me a lot of music to listen to.
I think songwriting is so exciting. I saw John Legend on Saturday…
John Legend, really? That is so cool I was just googling Gigs John Legend 2019 and found nothing! Where did he play?
At the Baloise Session. It’s a very cool venue with 10 gigs over 3 weeks and you are sitting at tables with candle’s on them. It has a Jazz club vibe.

It is. Anyway John Legend mentioned that he starts with a melody and then finds words that fits the melody. What about you? How do you write your songs?
It’s different every time. I think if you had a recipe how to write good songs everyone would want it. There are certain tips or ways how it’s best to write songs. I usually sit at the piano and transport my feelings into chords. Quite often a little lyrics slice comes up and then I use my phone to write it down. I think I have like 1500 voice messages! 🙂 A lot of ideas…
But most of the time I sit at the piano like 40 / 50 % and see what happens.

Your stage name is Spanish and you are German. So why did you choose English as your language of music?
I grew up with English music. Back then I wasn’t interested in Spanish music and I wasn’t familiar with German music because I grew up in Mallorca. My parents inspired me with English music and that’s why English is the language I felt most comfortable with when I write songs. Now I’d gotten used to it and I feel like I can get across my feelings better in English. When I’m at songwriting sessions I see that my German isn’t as good as others. They grew up in Germany and went to school there. That’s why I’m happy to be able to sing in English and there are not many German artists singing in English.
That’s why my blog is in English too!
Your – I call it “spring hit” – was „Rooftop“. When I heard it the first time I knew I loved it immediately!

At the moment I love the record by Khalid that just came out. I just loved every song… „Better“, „Saturday Nights“… I like R’n’B a lot. 6LACK is really cool. He’s got some cool features too. Amazing record!
And now your songs?
With „Rooftop“ I had a good gut feeling. If you jump up in the studio and you’re really happy that you wrote the song then it’s a good sign. Sometimes you think it’s good and then it’s bad but if you get up…

I googled and I found this Filipino actor Nico Santos. How often do you get mistaken for him?
When „Home“ came out a lot of people wrote and tagged him by mistake because I didn’t have Instagram and Twitter. So he wrote on Twitter: „I’m not Nico Santos the singer“. It started to annoy him so he tweeted: „Nico start your own IG and Twitter account!“ And I think OK, now I really have to.
So you two are in contact?
No. He wrote it and others sent it to me and so I knew I had to something now. I’ve never met him but I think it’s funny how two complete different people have the same name.
3rd of May you’re back in Zurich at X-tra for the final gig of your tour. What do you expect from the Swiss audience?
I was in Berne at Energy Air and I had one of the coolest shows ever! The energy was unbelievable, it was a lot of fun. It’s weird because in Germany people say they’re a bit aloof and you Swiss say it too but in Berne I thought I was Justin Bieber! 😀 I pointed at something and everyone completely lost their minds. It’s not like that in Germany. I tried a few different spots and the energy was the same!
Really? I had a very different experience the last few years? Maybe it’s the front rows I’m too old for that! 🙂
Ha, no! Maybe it’s that but you know during the „ohh ohh ohh“ part I thought the whole football stadium sang with me!

Last question: What needs to happen that you say „Yup I made it“ with my music?
I don’t think this exists. I never want to have this thought. Music is ambitious as well as your whole life. I don’t think there’s ever a point where I say „Now I have 100 golden records“ I made it. I think my wish is that I can make music my whole life and be happy and then, yes, then I made it 😀

Daniela who’s joining us at the gig in May asked: What made you step in front of the mic and not only write music for others anymore?
It always was a bit of a wish for me. When „Home“ worked in Germany with my voice, a song that I wrote in my when I was little, I thought it be cool to do my own music. The song was a bit too deep house for me so I wanted to do my own and perform them. That was the first moment I thought OK now I gotta start doing it.
Then I wrote „Safe“ and after that „Rooftop“.
Kellin asked: What’s your dream location where you want to perform?
Madison Square Garden. Every artist wants to play there 🙂
True. I heard it before in my previous interviews.
I heard that Stromae is the only French singing musician that sold out Madison Square Garden twice. If you managed to that, that’s not too bad!

It changed recently! Now it’s cheesecake.
What was it before cheesecake?
Everything with ice cream. It didn’t matter it just needed ice cream. I ate like 3 ice creams a day and now it’s cheesecake. Princess Cheesecake in Berlin is awesome. People might start saying „Nico stop it“.
I totally get what you mean I don’t know how people can have summer bodies! I have the best ice cream guy around the corner called Gelati am See and I’m there every lunch time.
Yeah, everyone talks about summer bodies but I don’t know how they do it either.

Kekoas Korner has been in contact with Madeleine Rauch for quite a few months now. She’s not only a Marteria Girl no she’s a kickass singer who’s super friendly and very talented. Last Friday I got Skype with her since she’s currently visiting friends in L.A. on a well deserved holiday.
Let’s start with a bit of background. How did you get into music?
Good Question! 🙂 As a kid I sang in a choir and I started playing the piano when I was 7 or 8. My parents thought it would be good if I could play an instrument. Then it all took its course. I was in the school choir and started singing solos and when I was around 14 I started my own band.
What kind of music did you play with your band?
We covered rock and pop songs!
Later I really wanted to study music. A lot of people told me it would be unrealistic and it’s gonna be difficult to get accepted. But I managed to do it!

I have to ask now. You’ve been a Marteria Girl for 1 1/2 years now. How did you start working with Marteria?
Connections helped. Miss Platnum started to look for a replacement because one of the girls wasn’t able to continue. I know the bass player in her band and he recommended me. Henrik texted me: „Would you like to sing for Marteria?“ And I was like: „Of course!“
So she called me to invite me for a little rehearsing session with the other singers. No casting it was totally laid back without any pressure. I sang a few songs and a few solos and then Miss Platnum liked what she heard and said you’re in!
Cool! So how does your tour life look like?
It depends! When we’re doing the festivals we’ve got breaks in-between. Usually you do a few festivals during the weekend and then you head back. The longer tours we’ve done in December and in March we were gone for 3 to 4 weeks. It’s a very special lifestyle. We’ve got a tour bus in which we sleep and drive from one city to the next in one night. You’re always around people and you don’t have a lot of privacy. It’s good if you’re kind of like a tour family like we have with Marteria. They were very kind to me when I started. If you didn’t get along with the people it would be super difficult to do it. Sometimes you get an off day and you get some well needed rest. I really love it!
A few months ago you released your own music. Tell me a bit more about „Hands Off“?
I recorded „Hands off“ and “Stick to my plan“ three years ago when I studied at Berklee. I wrote them already and during my year there I organized some friends and colleagues to form a band and they helped me record, mix, edit and master it. It took me a minute until I was completely happy with the mix. So I was happy to release them last autumn.
Who would you say is inspiring you musically?
It always changes. When I was 13/14 I loved Christina Aguilera.
Uhh I understand that! 😀
And then Alicia Keys became my idol. Of course I listened to some other musicians too but those two were very important to me. Later during my Jazz studies in Weimar I got into Neo-Soul: D’Angelo, Erykah Badu, Jill Scott.
At the moment I don’t think I’m into anything particular. I’m listening to a lot of different music but it’s always a bit of R’n’B or Soulish. I did have some phases where I was into the Red Hot Chili Peppers or Incubus but the music that inspires me and I’d like to do is more in the R’n’B/Soul genre.
You are in LA now visiting friends. What are your plans for the next few months?
Exactly! A lot of my friends from Berklee moved to L.A. and almost every day I am meeting up with old study buddies. It’s quite cool to be off for a month 😀
I’ll go back to Berlin to teach voice lessons and play gigs with the Smoke & Soul Band. That’s why I’ve been so busy the last few months.
Sounds very cool! Tell me a bit more about your Smoke & Soul band.
It’s my pretty successful cover band that I have had cool gigs with for example at the Weimarer Opera Ball or at Innotrans – this huge trade fair in Berlin.
And what about your students? How old are your students?
That varies a lot. Most of my students are in their 20s. It’s super fun! I’ll keep on teaching and if something else comes up like a session or a gig I’ll try to combine it. That’s the life of a musician.

Fast forward 5 or 10 years where do you want to be?
Making enough money with my own music and to be able to live off it. Of course I would also like to have my own family. I’m very bad at making longterm plans. I try to reach my short-term goals and don’t put pressure on me with long-term ones.
I get that! 🙂
What needs to happen that you would say „Yup I made it with my music!“?
The question implies that it will stop at one point but I think it always continues to be a work in progress. But I guess getting a record deal, having your music in the charts and cool gigs is pretty much I made it. I’m assuming that your standards are increasing and you wanna do even bigger things. But yeah, the three previous things would be a big step for me.

Anna asked what’s your favourite dessert?
Oh oh. Nutella-bread! 😀 I bet my Marteria-family will start laughing now because there I’m known at the Nutella-Girl! I always eat it and on tour you can’t keep secrets.
I also really like creme caramel. My Mom is doing it perfectly. Good question!
Sue asked what’s your fav drink of the year?
I’d say Whiskey Ginger Ale is my go to drink at the moment.
Sarah asked how does a day off look like?
Depends! If I haven’t got much energy I’ll be chilling and binge-watch Netflix. If I got enough energy I love to spend time with friends. I’ll be probably doing music anyways – Playing the piano or write songs or sing. Sometimes I read too! 😀
You mentioned Netflix what would you recommend watching?
I watched Suits and White Collar a lot. I also just watched 13 Reasons Why but that’s very extreme.
Ohh I heard about it but I think I’m a bit afraid to watch it.
